Lip filler is temporary, and the honest answer to how long it lasts is that it depends: on the gel, the amount, where it sits and on you. What can be said with a source behind it comes from the clinical studies makers sent to the FDA, and those studies followed people for about a year.

Lip Filler NYC is a free referral service. We are not a medical provider, clinic or med spa, and we do not perform procedures or employ any providers. A request sent here reaches a provider in New York City with their own licence. Nothing on this site is medical advice.
Why lip filler fades at all
Almost every lip filler used today is hyaluronic acid, a gel that holds water. The FDA explains that most fillers are temporary because the body slowly absorbs them, which is why repeat treatments may be needed. That is a feature as much as a drawback: a gel that breaks down is a gel that can also be dissolved if something goes wrong, which we cover in dissolving lip filler.
Cleveland Clinic adds that how fast filler goes depends partly on your metabolism, and that younger people may lose it faster. So two friends treated in the same week with the same product can see their results soften on different timetables.
What the FDA clinical studies found, product by product
Each product approved for lip augmentation went through a clinical study before approval. The figures below come from the FDA’s own summaries of those studies. They describe groups of people under study conditions; they are not a promise about your lips.
| Product (maker) | FDA lip approval | What the study reported |
|---|---|---|
| Restylane® Kysse (Galderma) | Lip augmentation and upper perioral lines, adults over 21, approved 2020 | Fullness of both lips held for 48 weeks after the final injection |
| Juvederm® Volbella® XC (Allergan) | Lip augmentation and perioral lines, adults over 21, approved 2016 | Follow-up ran 12 months; volume gains gradually tapered to an average 0.54 cc increase at month 12 |
| Juvederm® Ultra XC (Allergan) | Lip and perioral augmentation, adults over 21, approved 2015 | Follow-up ran 12 months; repeat treatment was offered when fullness returned to baseline between months 6 and 12 |

Reading the numbers
“Maintained for 48 weeks” and “followed for 12 months” describe how long a study looked, and what it saw in that time. Nobody can tell you in advance the week your filler will be gone.
What wears it down sooner, and what helps it hold
Ask your provider which of these apply to you.
- The product: gels are made differently, and each has its own approval and its own study results.
- The amount: ask how much they plan to use, and what that means for how the result looks as it softens.
- Placement: ask where in the lip the gel will go, and why there.
- Your body: metabolism plays a part, and Cleveland Clinic notes younger people may lose filler faster.
- What came before: whether gel from an earlier treatment is still there is worth asking about.
The first weeks are not the result
Right after treatment the lips are usually swollen, so they look fuller than they will. In the Restylane Kysse study the FDA reviewed, reactions at the injection site such as swelling, bruising and tenderness generally went away on their own within a week, and lumps typically settled in under 30 days. That is why many providers suggest a check-in about two weeks later, once you can see what the filler is actually doing.

When people go back for more
There is no fixed schedule. Some people return when they notice the shape softening; others let the filler fade completely and decide later whether to repeat it at all. In the Juvederm Ultra XC study, repeat treatment was offered once lip fullness had returned to where it started, which in that study came somewhere between six and twelve months.
Before adding more, it is worth asking whether there is still gel in your lips, how much you would add, and what happens to the shape when new filler is added to old. If filler has moved above the lip line or feels lumpy, adding more is usually the wrong first step; see dissolving lip filler.
Lip filler or a lip flip?
If what you want is a slight upturn of the upper lip rather than volume, a lip flip is a different treatment with a much shorter life, measured in months. It relaxes a muscle and adds no gel at all.
Does how long it lasts change the cost?
In practice, yes. Lip filler is usually priced per syringe, so how often you return matters as much as the first fee. Providers set their own prices; our page on lip filler cost in NYC has the one published national figure and what changes a quote.
Risks to weigh, however long it lasts
Among the common effects in the FDA’s list: bruises, redness, swelling, soreness, tenderness, itch and rash. Less common are lumps or nodules, infection, allergic reaction and tissue damage. Some effects can show up weeks, months or even years later. The most serious risk is gel entering a blood vessel, which can cause skin loss, vision problems including blindness, and stroke. Get care at once for unusual pain, a change in vision, skin near the lips turning white or blue, or any sign of a stroke.
Cleveland Clinic adds three more: a cold sore flaring up again, an uneven look, and gel drifting from the spot where it was injected. The FDA warns against needle-free filler pens and filler bought online.
Questions to ask about how long yours will last
- Which FDA-approved product do you suggest for me, and what did its clinical study show?
- How much would you use, and how might that change how long it lasts?
- When should I come back to check the settled result?
- How will we decide whether I need more, and when?
- If I want it gone sooner, can you dissolve it, and do you keep hyaluronidase on hand?

Questions people ask
How long does lip filler last on average?
There is no single average for every product. In the FDA-reviewed study for Restylane Kysse, lip fullness was maintained for 48 weeks after the last injection; studies for two Juvederm lip products followed people for 12 months. Your provider will explain what to expect for you.
Does lip filler last longer the second time?
No study on this site’s source list answers that. Ask your provider how they plan a repeat treatment and whether gel from the first one is still there.
Why does my filler seem to be gone after a few weeks?
The first days include swelling, which makes lips look fuller than the settled result. Judge it at the check-in about two weeks after treatment, and ask your provider if it still seems to have faded.
Can I make lip filler wear off faster?
Hyaluronic acid filler can usually be broken down by a provider with hyaluronidase. It is a medical treatment with its own risks; see our page on dissolving lip filler.
