Most lip filler is hyaluronic acid, and hyaluronic acid filler can usually be dissolved. But dissolving is a medical treatment of its own, with its own risks, and it is not always the right first move. This page covers how it works, why people ask for it, and when it makes sense to wait.

Lip Filler NYC is a free referral service. We are not a medical provider, clinic or med spa, and we do not perform procedures or employ any providers. A request sent here goes to a New York City provider with their own licence. Nothing on this site is medical advice.
How dissolving lip filler works
Hyaluronic acid filler can be broken down with hyaluronidase, an enzyme a provider injects where the gel sits, Cleveland Clinic explains. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes that hyaluronic acid is preferred in delicate areas partly because its effects can be reversed if a blood vessel is blocked, and says reversal medication should be immediately available wherever filler is injected.
Dissolving filler is an off-label use. The FDA-approved labels for Hylenex® recombinant and Amphadase® list other uses, such as helping other injected drugs spread under the skin. Using them on filler is a medical decision between you and a provider.
Know what you had
Hyaluronidase is used on hyaluronic acid filler. The FDA lists other filler materials too. If you are not sure what was injected before, ask the place that did it for the product name before you see someone new.
Why people ask to dissolve lip filler
- The filler has moved from where it was placed. Cleveland Clinic lists migration as a known effect of lip filler.
- The lips look uneven, or one side settled differently from the other.
- There is a lump that has not gone down with time.
- Several rounds have built up and the lips feel like too much.
- They simply do not like the result and want to start again, or stop.
When to wait, and when not to
Usually worth waiting
Fresh filler is swollen, and swelling can look uneven. In the Restylane® Kysse study the FDA reviewed, reactions at the injection site generally went away on their own within a week, and lumps typically settled in under 30 days. (Restylane® is a registered trademark of Galderma.) That is one reason a check-in is often booked about two weeks after treatment. Ask your provider how long they would like you to wait, and why.
Never wait
Some signs mean gel may be blocking a blood vessel, which the FDA calls the most serious risk of filler. Get care at once for unusual pain, skin near the lips turning white or blue, a change in vision, or any sign of a stroke. Call the provider who treated you straight away, and call 911 if you cannot reach them or symptoms are severe.
Want a provider to look at filler you already have?
What happens at the appointment
Expect a conversation first: what was injected, how much, when and by whom, and what you would like to change. The provider examines the lips and decides with you whether to dissolve all of it, part of it or none. They should ask about allergies, because hyaluronidase can cause allergic reactions, especially at high doses. A 2025 review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology advises clinicians to have antihistamines and corticosteroids on hand.
Ask what you should expect to see over the next days, what is normal and what is not, and when they would check the result.
The risks of dissolving
Removing filler is not always simple: the FDA cautions that it can be difficult or even impossible, and that removing it carries risks of its own. With hyaluronidase those include allergic reaction, plus the bruising, swelling and tenderness that come with any injection. A provider should explain these before treatment and tell you what to watch for afterward.
Starting again after dissolving
Some people stop there. Others want filler again, placed differently. Ask how long the provider would wait before injecting again, which product they would use, and how much, given what went wrong the first time. Our page on how long lip filler lasts explains what the clinical studies measured, and lip filler cost in NYC covers how to compare quotes, including what dissolving costs. If you mostly want the upper lip to show a little more, a lip flip adds no gel at all.
Questions to ask before dissolving
- Do you think this needs dissolving now, or should I wait? Why?
- Will you dissolve all of it or part of it?
- What reaction could I have, and how do you handle an allergic reaction?
- What will my lips look like in the first days afterward?
- If I want filler again, how long should I wait?
- What does dissolving cost, and is a follow-up included?
In New York, both dissolving and injecting are medical procedures that need a health-care licence. Look up the provider on the NYSED Office of the Professions verification search, and for help choosing in the city, read our guide to the Upper East Side and Manhattan.
This site gives general information, not medical advice. Whether lip filler is right for you is for a licensed provider who has examined you to say. In an emergency, call 911.
Before you book, look up the injector’s licence on the NYSED Office of the Professions verification search.
Questions people ask
Can all lip filler be dissolved?
Hyaluronidase is used on hyaluronic acid filler, the type most lip products are. If you do not know what was used, find out the product name before you see a new provider.
How soon can I dissolve lip filler?
Early swelling can look uneven, so ask your provider whether to wait until it settles; in one FDA-reviewed lip study, injection-site reactions generally went away within a week. Warning signs of a blocked blood vessel are different: get care at once.
Is dissolving lip filler FDA-approved?
No. The FDA-approved labels for hyaluronidase products list other uses, so dissolving filler is off-label. A licensed provider decides with you whether it suits your case.
Will my lips go back to how they were?
Only the provider who examines you can say what to expect. Ask what your lips may look like in the first days and when they would check them again.
