Say what you want
Hydrated, shaped or fuller
Three ways people describe what they want. A provider says what is realistic for you.
Hydrated
- You might say
- I want my lips to look rested, not bigger.
- Usually means
- A small amount, spread evenly, edges left soft.
- Worth knowing
- A common first step; more can be added later.
Shaped
- You might say
- I want a clearer outline and cupid’s bow.
- Usually means
- Work along the border and the peaks of the bow.
- Worth knowing
- Shape changes more than size does.
Fuller
- You might say
- I want more volume in one lip or both.
- Usually means
- Building in stages so the lips stay in balance.
- Worth knowing
- Early swelling looks bigger than the settled result.

The appointment
What happens at a lip filler appointment
Cleveland Clinic describes a visit of 30 minutes to two hours. Your provider explains their routine.
The conversation
Your goals, your health, allergies and any filler you have had before.
Numbing
Usually a numbing cream that takes 15 to 30 minutes; many gels also contain lidocaine.
The injections
Small amounts, placed and checked as they go, then up to 15 minutes of watching afterward.
The check-in
A follow-up is often about two weeks later, once swelling has settled.

- How much do you suggest, and why that amount?
- Do you keep hyaluronidase on hand if something goes wrong?

The basics
What lip filler is
Most lip filler is hyaluronic acid, a gel made to resemble a substance your body already makes. The FDA classes it as a medical device: the gel holds water and swells, adding shape and volume. The body breaks it down over time, so how long lip filler lasts is the usual next question.
Lip Filler NYC is a free referral service. We are not a medical provider, clinic or med spa, and we do not perform procedures or employ any providers.
Risks
The risks, as the FDA lists them
Bruising, redness, swelling and tenderness are common. Less often there are lumps, infection or an allergic reaction. The most serious risk is filler entering a blood vessel, which can damage skin and, rarely, cause vision loss or stroke. Unusual pain, a change in eyesight, or white or blue skin around the lips means getting care straight away, the FDA says.

The FDA warns against needle-free filler pens and filler sold online or straight to consumers.
Who injects
Who is allowed to inject in New York
New York counts a filler injection as medicine, so it needs a health-care licence; estheticians and cosmetologists cannot inject. A registered nurse may inject under a regimen prescribed by a licensed physician or another licensed provider.

Questions
Lip filler questions, answered briefly
Who will I talk to?
A provider in New York City with their own licence. Lip Filler NYC is a free referral service. We are not a medical provider, clinic or med spa, and we do not perform procedures or employ any providers. Lip Filler NYC may receive compensation from participating providers.
How much filler is used the first time?
Cleveland Clinic gives about 1 mL as typical. Many first-timers ask for less; see our note on the half syringe.
Does it hurt?
Most people feel pressure and a sting. A numbing cream and gels that contain lidocaine are used to make it more comfortable.
Can lip filler be dissolved?
Hyaluronic acid filler can usually be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Read dissolving lip filler.
Is a lip flip the same thing?
No. A lip flip relaxes the muscle above the lip with a small dose of botulinum toxin. It adds no volume.
Who should not have lip filler?
The FDA says safety is not known in pregnancy, while breastfeeding or under age 22. An active cold sore or infection near the lips is a reason to wait.
This site gives general information, not medical advice. Whether lip filler is right for you is for a licensed provider who has examined you to say. In an emergency, call 911.
Before you book, look up the injector’s licence on the NYSED Office of the Professions verification search.
